Top 5 Photography Educators | For Photographers

June 25, 2018

Filed in: Education

This week I’m continuing my photography education series with a post about my favorite educators in the photography business. Some of these people also have programs and blogs geared towards other creatives so if you aren’t a photographer, some of this may still be relevant to you! It’s so important to invest time (and yes, money!) in education when you first get started. The easiest way to learn quickly is to follow those who have been successful before you! I’ve read tons of blogs and watched free webinars and videos to try and teach myself all the details that go into running a business. In this post you’ll find some of my all time favorite resources and I hope they help you as much as they helped me!

Katelyn James

Katelyn is my all-time favorite educator! She has beautiful technique and photos but she also teaches in a way that makes it easy for me to learn. Her education blogs are a free resources and include tips on everything from posing to technical photography skills to business tips! She hosts free webinars pretty regularly on lighting, posing, and editing and I highly recommend signing up for one of those. However, my all time favorite KJ resources are her courses! They were my best investment when I first started and I can’t talk them up enough. She has courses on posing, editing, and finding the best lighting. She also has a monthly series called KJ All Access where she takes you along for weddings and engagement sessions via video and shares her thinking throughout the day! These courses do cost money but are well worth the expense in my opinion.

Hope Taylor

I love Hope for her educational resources geared towards senior photographers! Many educators focus on weddings and couples, but when I was first starting out I mostly photographed seniors. So, I was so grateful to discover Hope’s blogs and webinars that helped me learn more about posing and photographing my senior clients! You can read her educational blog posts for yourself here! She also has in person workshops for young photographers because she started her business at 16! I haven’t been to her workshops but based on her other educational resources I’m sure they would be amazing!

Jenna Kutcher

Jenna has all the business tips!! She will teach you how to market yourself (on the web and on social media). My favorite Jenna Kutcher resource is her podcast! It’s called the Goal Digger podcast and on it she invites other educators from various industries to speak about their areas of expertise. It is so helpful to learn about business, marketing, and social media because photography is definitely not just about the photos you take. There is so much that goes into having a business and her free podcast will teach you them all! Also, this podcast is great for any creative business owner, not just photographers!

Amy and Jordan

Amy and Jordan are a super sweet husband and wife duo! They are wedding photographers and put out tons of educational content to help other photographers as well. My favorite resource from them is called The Monday Minute. It’s a weekly email they send to you with a 5 minute bit of education geared towards the wedding industry. I love this because I get it consistently and don’t have to spend a ton of time to learn something useful. It’s also nice that it comes to your inbox so you don’t have to go out of your way or spend time searching the internet to find something to learn about. It’s also a free resource so why not?? Amy and Jordan are super consistent with their blogging so if you’re looking to add this to your business I would recommend checking theirs out for some inspiration as well!

Rising Tide Society

So this last one is not an actual educator but an excellent resource to learn about different aspects of the creative business world! RTS is actually an organization for all entrepreneurs to actually meet up with one another on Tuesdays! This is a great way to make real connections with other people in your area and learn from people in person at the monthly meetings. There are also online downloads and blogs that are super helpful.

So there you have it! My 5 favorite educational resources for photographers. I hope this helps you so that you can take the advice from these successful business owners and apply it to your own business!
